Honoring a Vision, Changing Lives Through Tennis
The Cary Cohenour Tennis Foundation is dedicated to empowering boys and girls through the values and opportunities that tennis provides. Our programs focus on youth development, mentorship, education, character building, and creating a positive environment where young people can grow both on and off the court.
Everything we do is rooted in the vision of our founder, Cary Cohenour, whose passion for tennis and commitment to helping young people inspired the creation of this foundation. Cary believed that tennis was more than a sport, it was a pathway to confidence, discipline, leadership, and lifelong success.
Although Cary passed away in 2023, his legacy continues to guide our mission every day. We are committed to carrying forward his dream by providing opportunities for boys and girls to learn, compete, develop meaningful life skills, and reach their full potential.
As a non-profit organization, every donation, partnership, and volunteer contribution helps us expand our impact and continue the work that Cary started. Together, we are building a lasting legacy that empowers future generations through the game of tennis.
Keeping Cary’s vision alive—one child, one lesson, and one opportunity at a time.

About Cary Cohenour
Our foundation was born from the vision, passion, and lifelong dedication of Cary, an accomplished player, respected coach, and mentor who believed that tennis could change lives.
From an early age, Cary established himself as one of Florida’s most accomplished junior players, earning the No. 1 ranking in every junior age division in the state. As one of the original players at the renowned Bollettieri Tennis Academy, he built an impressive competitive career that included four national junior titles and victories at the prestigious Easter Bowl in both the 14-and-under and 16-and-under divisions. Along the way, he earned the John VanNostrand Outstanding Sportsmanship and Good Play Award, reflecting not only his talent but also the character and integrity that defined him throughout his life.
Cary continued his success at the University of Tennessee, where he competed from 1984 to 1987 and achieved an NCAA singles ranking of No. 3. Following college, he pursued a professional career on the ATP Tour, reaching a world ranking of No. 272 and earning notable results in international competition.
Yet, while his achievements as a player were remarkable, Cary’s greatest legacy was his impact as a coach, mentor, and leader. He dedicated his life to developing young athletes and creating opportunities for boys and girls to discover the values of hard work, discipline, sportsmanship, and self-confidence through tennis. After serving as Director of Billy Stearn’s Tennis Academy, he went on to lead Celsius Tennis Academy in Sarasota, where he became known for his ability to inspire players of all ages and skill levels.
His commitment to youth development earned him numerous honors, including being named the USTA Florida Junior Competitive Coach of the Year. Over the course of his coaching career, he introduced hundreds of young people to the game of tennis. He was also recognized with two USA Sportsmanship Awards and was inducted into the Gulf Coast Tennis Hall of Fame in 2012, reflecting both his accomplishments and the respect he earned throughout the tennis community.
Sadly, Cary passed away in 2023, leaving behind an enormous void in the lives of his family, friends, students, and the countless individuals who were fortunate enough to know him. His loss was felt throughout the tennis community and beyond, not simply because of his achievements, but because of the extraordinary kindness, generosity, and compassion he showed to everyone around him. For many, he was far more than a coach, he was a mentor, role model, and lifelong friend.
Although his passing left a space that can never truly be filled, his vision continues to guide everything we do. This foundation was created to honor his legacy and carry forward the mission that was closest to his heart: helping young people grow, succeed, and discover their potential through the game of tennis. Every child we serve, every program we offer, and every opportunity we create stands as a tribute to Cary’s enduring impact and the values he championed throughout his life.
More than a champion on the court, Cary’s greatest achievement was the positive difference he made in the lives of others. His legacy lives on through every young athlete inspired by his example and every life touched by his vision.

Why is tennis such a great activity?
Tennis is a highly engaging and athletic sport that you can play for the rest of your life. It is social, low cost and played throughout the world. But the real benefit comes to those who learn from a younger age, a critical period for developing motor skills, cognitive function, and emotional resilience. Starting young leverages your child’s capacity for learning and adapting, making complex skills like coordination and strategic thinking easier to master and retain.
Other benefits include discipline and responsibility, focus and concentration, emotional regulation, confidence and sportsmanship. Read more…
